Friends,

Many people do not appreciate the work that we all do as campaign volunteers – the doors we knock, the calls we make and the long hours we devote every election season to our candidates for no pay and for little recognition.

I am sure that you have wondered from time to time if the hard work and long hours you dedicate to campaigns and issues you’re passionate about is worth the time and effort. Well, I do believe that it is worth it – and your hard work is more important now than at any point in our history.

I’ve included a link to a short documentary that chronicles President Obama’s tough choices and accomplishments since taking office. Please take a couple of minutes and watch this video, because I believe it will remind us all why we do what we do.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2POembdArVo

We were all part of making history in 2008, not just because we played a part in electing the first African-American President. We also made history by electing the right person to lead our great nation through very difficult times. We elected a man who is willing to make the tough choices that will lead us to a brighter and better future for all Americans.

On this St. Patrick’s Day weekend I’m reminded of an Irish blessing that starts with the line, “May the road rise to meet you…” I like this line because it conjures up images of the future and a pathway ahead. As we all journey through the campaign to re-elect President Obama, keep your eye on the rising road ahead, and know that the work that we do will make that future brighter for all Americans.

Have a great weekend,

Sincerely,

Dear Governor Romney,

It just came to my attention that you will be fundraising for your Presidential campaign in St. Louis today. I just wanted to take a moment and welcome you to the great state of Missouri.

I know that you don’t make it to Missouri as much as you visit our neighbors to the north in the Hawkeye State, but you’ll see while you’re here that Missourians are some of the most hard-working and entrepreneurial folks in the entire country.

While we’re happy to have you in our state, we hope that you take some time to answer a few questions. It seems that unlike most people running for office, you are unwilling to answer questions from voters and the press, and your staff even claims that you’re not “ready” to appear on a Sunday show.

As a career candidate like you knows, fielding questions on your proposals and explaining your record are really a cornerstone of the political process. Unfortunately, it looks like the only questions you’ll be taking today are from donors, so we took the liberty of putting together a few questions we hope you’ll answer:

1) Last night Senate Republicans voted to raise taxes on nearly 160 million Americans just so millionaires and billionaires don’t have to pay their fair share. Why do you support raising taxes on middle-class Americans?

2) The President’s payroll tax cut would let the typical Missouri family keep an extra $1,520 of what they earn. Why do you think that $1,520 is nothing more than a “little band-aid” for middle-class families?

3) Your campaign says that you’re not “ready” to sit down for a Sunday show. If you’re not ready for a few tough interviews, what makes you think you’re ready to lead the country?

4) Reckless behavior on Wall Street led us to the brink of economic disaster in 2008, so why do you want to repeal the safeguards that protect America’s taxpayers and why do you want to let Wall Street write its own rules again?

5) In a recent interview, you refused to answer a question about what book you are reading – are you ready to stop dodging the simplest questions?

I look forward to your speedy reply and again, welcome to Missouri.

Sincerely,

Brian Wahby

Chairman

14-Year Voting Record Shows Billions in Government Giveaways to Big Oil

Jefferson City – As Big Oil executives took heat on Capitol Hill yesterday, Forbes released an article “Where Big Oil Puts Its Money on Capitol Hill”, highlighting Congressman Roy Blunt’s record of raking in chart-topping amounts of cash from Big Oil. The article notes that Congressman Blunt has the distinction of being the second-highest recipient of Big Oil money in the entire House of Representatives for the current campaign cycle [Forbes, 6/15/2010].

The other top recipients of Big Oil cash are largely from oil producing states, unlike Congressman Blunt. However, given Congressman Blunt’s 14-year record of protecting Big Oil, the news doesn’t come as a total surprise, but serves as a reminder of who Congressman Blunt has been working for during his seven terms in Washington. Congressman Blunt’s record includes doling out billions in government giveaways to Big Oil and fighting to ease drilling restrictions for oil companies.

“As oil continues to seep, so do the stories about Congressman Blunt’s ties to Big Oil,” said Ryan Hobart, Communications Director for the Missouri Democratic Party. “The more we learn about Congressman Blunt’s chart-topping Big Oil contributions, the more we understand why he has spent the last 14 years in Washington protecting Big Oil companies.”

Congressman Blunt recently added to his Big Oil coffers when he took money from Halliburton after the spill began and Congress started investigating the company’s potential involvement in causing the spill. [Fec.gov (Halliburton contribution on 05/17/10)].

Last night I volunteered at the OFA Missouri office on California Avenue in St. Louis. It had been some time since I had done voter contact and I had forgotten how much fun it can be. Two days away from the special election, I was making calls to Boston, MA asking folks to vote for Martha Coakley for US Senate and to help out her campaign as we enter the final stretch.

When I introduced myself as the party chair from St. Louis, people were very appreciative that I was calling and told me that my call underscored how important the Senate race in MA was to our country.

One voter, Matt, was watching a playoff football game with some friends when I called. I stated why I was calling and he was floored that I would call from St. Louis. I told him that if I could, I’d be in Boston right now knocking on doors for Martha (right after the game). I asked him to be my surrogate instead.

“Matt do us in Missouri a favor – go over to the campaign field office and volunteer for a couple of hours.”

He said, “Grassroots got us here and efforts like yours tonight will help us reshape our nation!”

Matt signed up for a shift in a Boston field office!

Do yourself a favor – help elect a Democrat to Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat by finding an OFA phone bank or go to www.barackobama.com to learn how to help move the President’s agenda forward.

Just like Matt, you can make the difference.

Chairman

St. Louis City Democratic Central Committee
